Fine-tune dashboard and config colors here. Edit the default dark and light palettes, or create your own under Custom themes — then click Save colors to apply. Dozens of built-in themes are already available in General → Appearance if you want a ready-made look without editing every color.
Auto dark mode (General → Appearance) only works with built-in dark/light theme pairs — it is disabled when a custom theme is selected.

Use Add Custom Theme to create a palette from the default starter colors.

        Manage Custom Themes

Customize keyboard shortcuts. Click "Rebind" next to any shortcut and press the key you want to use. Press Escape to cancel.

        Quick Start (30 sec)

        • Open search with >, type a bookmark, press Enter.
        • Open recent bookmarks with *.
        • Open keyboard cheatsheet with ! or F1.
        • Open config and tune dashboard layout, sorting, and smart collections.

        First-Run Onboarding

        • On first launch, a short guided setup helps configure the dashboard in minutes.
        • You can choose language, link behavior, weather/date preferences, search mode, and how to use bookmarks from the keyboard and mouse.
        • The wizard supports live language switching while you are in onboarding.
        • You can always skip and change everything later in config#general.

        Config → General

        • Essentials shows everyday settings: language, theme, font, favicon styling, layout, bookmarks, smart collections, and footer buttons.
        • Advanced shows power options: background and font fine-tuning, bookmark display details, status monitoring, branding, search behavior, and system tools. Use the section links at the top of the Advanced layer to jump directly to a section.
        • Show all sections on one page — the button in the layer toolbar renders Essentials and Advanced sections together in one scrollable list.
        • Bookmarks — display options (icons, shortcuts, badges, link preview) and behavior options (sorting, tab behavior, page tabs) live in a single section. A divider separates the two groups.
        • Tours & onboarding — in Advanced → System, the collapsible Tours & onboarding block holds all tour-reset buttons. Expand it to reset the onboarding wizard, the feature tour, context tips, or any individual tab tour.
        • Changes only apply after clicking Save. The dashboard updates without a full page reload.

        Navigation

        • Switch pages with number keys 1-9.
        • Press , to open the page overview — shows all pages with bookmark counts. Navigate with ↑/↓, jump directly with 1-9, confirm with Enter, close with Esc or ,.
        • Move between pages with Shift + Left/Right.
        • Navigate bookmarks with Up/Down and Left/Right.
        • Open selected bookmark with Enter or Space.
        • Clear keyboard selection with Esc (also undoes the latest drag reorder when applicable).

        Phone vs desktop

On narrow or touch layouts, nextDash uses a simplified dashboard and config.

        • Footer — phone: Search and + Bookmark only.
        • Commands & finders — phone: open Search, then use overlay tabs > / : / ?.

        Keyboard shortcuts

Rebind search, navigation, and dashboard keys. The keyboard tab is not in the main tab bar — open it here.

        • Open the cheat sheet on the dashboard with ! or F1.

        Open keyboard settings

        Dashboard bookmarks (keyboard & mouse)

        • Keyboard: arrow keys move the highlight; ; (semicolon) opens inline edit on the highlighted row or when focus is on a bookmark link (e.g. after Tab).
        • Mouse — left strip: the narrow drag handle on the left of each row is for dragging: reorder inside a category or drop into another category column.
        • Mouse — long-press: press and hold about half a second on the bookmark row (not on the drag strip) to open the same inline edit form.
        • Hover: hovering a bookmark can load preview metadata when that behavior is enabled in settings.

        Date & Weather

        • Toggle date and time independently, and choose date format: short slash, short dash, MM/DD/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD, weekday only, or long weekday.
        • Choose time format: 24-hour or 12-hour AM/PM.
        • Date/time render on one line as 13:35 @ 30-04-2026; weather renders on the next line.
        • Weather line includes a small icon per condition (clear/cloudy/rain/snow/fog/drizzle/thunderstorm/unknown).
        • Enable weather display and select location source (browser or manual city).
        • Set Celsius/Fahrenheit and weather refresh interval from the Date & Weather card in general settings.
        • If weather does not show, verify manual location text and save once.

        Smart Collections

        • Recently opened, Stale bookmarks, and Most used are generated automatically.
        • Each smart collection can be enabled per page and limited in visible items.
        • Set limit to 0 for unlimited items.
        • Smart sections support collapse/expand on dashboard.

        Tags

        • Add tags to any bookmark in config → Bookmarks (comma-separated).
        • Tags are normalised: trimmed, lowercased, and deduplicated on save.
        • tag:work in search filters overlay results; / tag cloud filters dashboard tiles (desktop).
        • :tag work lists bookmarks by tag in the command palette without changing the dashboard.
        • Enable tag collections in config → General → Smart Collections to auto-generate one collection per tag.

        Dynamic Collections

        • Create custom collections in config → Collections.
        • Each collection has one or more rules: match by tag, category, or shortcut.
        • Choose AND (all rules must match) or OR (any rule matches) logic.
        • Collections appear as read-only smart sections on the dashboard.

        Sorting, Pinned & Categories

        • Pinned bookmarks always stay on top of non-pinned bookmarks.
        • Pinned state is shown with a compact pin icon on dashboard rows.
        • Pinned bookmarks are always sorted alphabetically.
        • Non-pinned bookmarks use your selected sort mode (manual, A-Z, recent, pinned-first behavior).
        • Categories can be collapsed and can default to collapsed.

        Manage Bookmarks

        • Add, edit, reorder, move, and remove bookmarks in config.
        • Bookmarks can include a short note; it shows as a badge on the dashboard, appears in hover previews, and can be edited from the new-bookmark modal, inline edit, or config.
        • Set bookmark icons in config via file upload or icon URL; use Clear to remove and Undo in the toast to restore.
        • Bulk actions: select, move category, toggle pin, delete.
        • On the dashboard, drag the left strip handle to reorder or move bookmarks; long-press the row (not the strip) to open inline edit.
        • Use Alt+Up / Alt+Down to reorder quickly in config lists.
        • Conflict highlighting warns about duplicate URLs and shortcuts before save.

        Finders

        • Format: ?shortcut your query (example: ?g nextdash).
        • Use %s in finder URL where query should be inserted.
        • If bookmark and finder share a shortcut, both options are shown in search context.

        Status Monitor

        • Enable status checks to display online/offline state.
        • Optionally show ping and loading indicators.
        • Use "Skip fast ping check" to reduce noise and speed up checks.

        Bookmark Health Monitoring

        • Visit the health page (accessible from dashboard header) to monitor all your bookmarks in one place.
        • Each bookmark gets a 0-100 health score based on multiple factors: broken status, duplicates, staleness (unused time), missing metadata.
        • View 8 summary statistics: total bookmarks, healthy, broken, duplicates, unchecked, stale, missing preview, and unused.
        • Use filter pills to focus on specific issue types (broken, duplicate, stale, etc.).
        • Search bookmarks by name, URL, category, or page to find items quickly.
        • Click the refresh button to re-scan all bookmarks and detect the latest issues.
        • Bulk actions: retest all checked bookmarks, open all broken links at once, or merge duplicate groups.
        • Ping results are cached to avoid repeatedly checking the same URLs.

        Tips Rotation Above Buttons

        • Tips rotate every 5 to 8 seconds above the dashboard button bar.

        Backup & import

        • ZIP backup exports pages, bookmarks, categories, settings, and themes. Importing ZIP replaces all current data — always create a backup first.
        • Browser import: export bookmarks from Chrome, Firefox, or Edge as an HTML file and import via config → backups → "Import from Browser". Bookmark folders become categories; duplicate URLs are skipped automatically.
        • CSV export: download all bookmarks from all pages as a single CSV (Name, URL, Category, Page, Shortcut) via config → backups → "Export to CSV". Opens in Excel, Google Sheets, or any text editor.

        Theme, Layout & Branding

        • Choose theme, font size, font weight, and layout preset.
        • Enable auto dark mode to follow system appearance and switch between the default dark/light variants instantly.
        • Pick a UI font from the dropdown in Essentials, or upload a custom font — it stays available as Custom font (uploaded) in that list.
        • Upload custom favicon in Advanced → Branding.

        Data, Storage & Device-Specific Settings

        • Server-side data is stored in /data.
        • Device-specific settings are stored in browser local storage.
        • When device-specific mode is enabled, visual behavior can differ between devices.

        Troubleshooting

        • No bookmarks visible: check page selector and category filter in config.
        • Sorting seems wrong: verify sort mode and pin state.
        • Tips not visible: enable "Show tips above buttons" in Dashboard settings.
        • Search misses items: try fuzzy search and filter syntax.
